Patrick points out that "it appears that the main cables have the sockets (above the roadway) perhaps due to the lengthening of the main cables as a result of the major thoroughfare being built after this bridge. The anchorage would have had to be backed up to make room for the much wider road, thus extending the main cables. The main cables on the Pikeville side of the bridge cross over the four lanes (and generous center turning lane and shoulders) of US 23, US460, and KY 80. Next to this major thoroughfare lies the old two lane road with shoulders that now serves as the service road, thus between the tower and the anchorage are 6 lanes, a center turning lane, and four shoulders."
