Considered the first long-span self-anchored suspension bridge, the Deutz suspension bridge influenced the design of other suspension bridges such as the Three Sisters bridges.
Jochem writes: "The bridge nearly finished (1914). On the rear of the postcard it says: Construction started 19 May 1913. Opened for pedestrians 24 December 1914 (you can see the Christmas trees)."
Collapsed in 1945 while undergoing repairs.
The collapsed bridge with a temporary timber replacement bridge visible in the background.
Another view of the collapsed bridge. Jochem writes: "Showing collapsed suspension bridge remains on top of pier, with temporary timber replacement bridge nicknamed 'the millipede' to left, and the early stage of replacement steel box girder bridge with rolling crane for construction in right hand side background of picture, looking from Deutz towards Cologne. Picture probably 1947."
The pontoon bridge built in 1822 that was replaced by the suspension bridge.
This early box girder bridge, completed in 1948, replaced the suspension bridge which had collapsed in 1945.
