Tim writes in 2008: "Earlier this year the bridge was damaged by a falling tree and that West Sussex County Council intends to demolish it and replace it by a modern fixed span bridge... I have not yet been able to ascertain when the current structure was originally built (most of what is currently there probably only dates back a few decades) but a suspension bridge has existed at this site for at least 141 years. A suspension bridge was mentioned in Kelly's Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, 1867 and is shown on the 1876 OS 1:2500 (25" : 1 mile) map."
