Completed in 1967, this is (at least) the third suspension bridge at this site. A 1912 bridge was destroyed by fire in 1921. A 1940 suspension bridge was destroyed by flood in 1965. This is also one of the first large North American suspension bridges built after the 1940 Tacoma disaster to be designed without a stiffening truss.
