This bridge is one of several Milwaukee Art Museum structures designed by Santiago Calatrava. The structure that looks like a whale fin is the Burke Brise Soleil. It is a movable sun screen and is not part of the bridge. The bridge was at the center of some controversy in late 2002. There is a small granite curb where the cables meet the bridge deck (visible in the fifth and ninth photos below). Two elderly women tripped over it, broke their hips, and filed insurance claims against the museum. A November 6th 2002 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article said, "Ironically... the curb was put in as a way to prevent sight-impaired visitors from walking into the cables" As a stopgap, the museum installed a temporary wooden guard around the cables and the curb. The permanent stainless steel railing was installed in 2003.
