Instead of an expensive new building, an engineering balancing act was decided: between 1938 and 1940, the bridge was cut lengthwise, pushed two meters apart, filled in the middle and further structurally adapted. With a lane width of 13.5 m, a total of four lanes including tram tracks could be created."
