Originally used on a spur of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, this historic truss was completed in 1887. It employs "Phoenix columns" for the compression members. In Great American Bridges And Dams, Donald Jackson describes the Phoenix column: "Made of wrought-iron segments rolled along a circular arc and riveted together, this type of column was strong but did not connect easily with other structural members and was eventually abandoned."
